The North Carolina congressman who has recently been in the national spotlight over health care reform returned to Asheville on Friday.

Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., spoke at the Council of Independent Business Owners luncheon Friday afternoon at UNC Asheville.

Meadows is also chair of the Freedom Caucus, the group responsible for canceling the House vote on the GOP health care bill last Friday in Washington.

One man in the CIBO crowd asked Meadows why, after seven years of promising to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Republicans did not follow through.

"I would like for you to be honest with me, and let me know why Congress or the leadership couldn't put a bill together, thank you," he said to Meadows.

"That frustration you're expressing is not unique to you," Meadows responded. "As you know, I share that same frustration. What happened was, I think there was an expectation that there would be somebody else in the White House.

"My concern beyond that Nov. 8 happened, that there should have been real text and we should have been ready to roll on Jan. 20 with a bill we had already debated and already done that."

Meadows also said he believes Congress should continue to work on a better vetted health care plan that works for everyone.
